How the University of Florida wired AI into every major — and what it learned

UF's “AI Across the Curriculum” initiative has grown from an $85 million supercomputing bet into more than 230 AI courses spanning all 16 colleges. Inside Higher Ed this week spotlighted how the university embedded AI into every major — and what the effort has taught it. UF frames AI literacy as a graduation-level competency for every student, not a specialization confined to computer science.

Its HiPerGator AI supercomputer — still the fastest in U.S. higher education — anchors teaching, research, and workforce training from agriculture to the arts. “The AI Tipping Point”: adoption goes mainstream

What was studied: D2L and Tyton Partners' annual Time for Class 2026 surveyed 300+ administrators, 1,500+ instructors, and ~1,500 students across two- and four-year U.S. institutions.

What they found: AI has “moved from the margins to the mainstream,” shifting the strategic question from monitoring students to engaging them — treating AI as a teaching and workforce-readiness strategy, not just a policy problem.

What you could do: Use the framing to move a department past “allow vs. ban” toward what you assess and why.

Rethinking non-exam assessment security

What was studied: A Frontiers in Education scoping review of university guidelines and peer-reviewed advice (since 2023) on redesigning non-exam assessment in applied and vocational disciplines.

What they found: GenAI is compromising non-exam assessments and detection is insufficient — yet employability demands students learn to use AI, so assessment must be redesigned rather than merely defended.

Who: Instructors profiled in Six Red Marbles' “Field Notes,” drawing on a Chronicle survey of 100+ faculty and a CSU survey of ~94,000.

What they did: A San Jose State philosophy professor went low-tech (paper course packs, in-class participation, shared Google Docs to trace thinking); a computational chemistry professor ran oral exams modeled on coding interviews; a psychology professor paired a three-page AI-policy syllabus with multi-step paper verification.

What you could borrow: Add a “show-your-thinking” layer to one high-risk assignment rather than detecting AI after the fact.
