Ohio State makes "AI fluency" a graduation expectation — and becomes the test case

Ohio State's AI Fluency initiative commits that every undergraduate, starting with the class of 2029, will graduate "AI fluent" — fluent in their field and in applying AI within it. President Ravi Bellamkonda frames graduates as "bilingual" in their major and in AI. It is the most-watched example of a national pivot from banning AI to teaching fluency as a graduate skill.

The rollout is not frictionless. Faculty say they were initially caught off guard, and the initiative does not require an AI element in every course. When departments were asked what fluency should look like in their programs, the most common answer was that they did not yet know.

A 26,811-student study finds an "AI learning penalty"

"The Generative AI Learning Penalty" (Strömberg, Lei & Wu; CEPR DP21577) tracked Chinese secondary students for 30 months: AI cut homework time ~30% and raised homework scores ~18%, but monthly exam scores fell ~20% within six months, with entrance-exam penalties of 18–24% after two years. Losses concentrated among students who finished unusually fast. Ethan Mollick's summary: "AI tutoring in support of classes is good, using AI to 'help' with homework is bad."

The detection era is ending

After two years of detect-and-ban, multiple analyses this week argue AI detection is too unreliable and inequitable to anchor integrity policy — false positives fall hardest on multilingual writers, turning an integrity tool into an equity problem. The recommended path: teach AI fluency and rebuild assessment around demonstrable learning. As one analysis puts it, "a detector should never become the university's AI policy by default."

Elon University's Imagining the Digital Future Center and AAC&U have grown their open, Creative-Commons "Student Guide to AI" series, adding "Human Wisdom for the Age of AI: A Field Guide." More than 35,000 guide PDFs have been downloaded by educators and students at roughly 4,000 institutions across 170 countries, with 100-plus campuses receiving custom editions. A systematic review screened 320 records (102 included) and found roughly nine student-focused articles for every one focused on the educator, plus systemic gaps: little longitudinal data, weak links between engineering and pedagogy, and geographic skew. A scoping review concludes that guidelines-plus-detection are insufficient, and that the field is moving from rule-based enforcement toward proactive ethical reasoning, co-created clarity, and student voice. An instructor posting to r/TurnitinPlug described how the conversation shifted from Turnitin "similarity" — which you can click into and verify — to a black-box AI-probability score treated as a guilty verdict. The effect: students write in rigid, robotic prose to dodge detectors while real copying slips under the radar. What you could borrow: evaluate writing the old way — drafts, revisions, sources — and never treat a detection percentage as standalone proof.

Vince Castillo, an assistant professor of logistics at Ohio State's Fisher College of Business, dubbed his classroom "Amsterdam for AI," openly encouraging ChatGPT use and now sitting on the university's AI Fluency advisory committee. A clearly bounded "permitted zone" replaced ambiguity. What you could borrow: designate one assignment as an explicit AI-permitted zone with crisp expectations, instead of leaving the rules implicit.

Try This Week

Tell students to use AI as a tutor that quizzes them — not an answer key that does the homework. Then grade one assignment on drafts and process, and retire the detection score as "proof."
